What did any one who wasn’t a fifth generation, blond haired, blue eyed “American” think was going to happen? When people like Stephen Miller are policy makers, they should be glad there’s not public hangings televised. Nancy Mace would be running the popcorn concession. Frankly, we stand a better chance with the leopards.

Nancy's avatar

Leopards are just natural predators (though I prefer the term "carnivores," since the news has made "predators" into something truly disgusting as only a sentient species can warp it). It takes a sentient species like humans to be that sadistic. X-P

Vee's avatar

It is scary. I keep telling my friend and his sister not to go visit his home land (taking the ashes of his brother-in-law home) because they may not be let back in. They got here legally and are now a citizens, they are from El Salvador.

Lady Emsworth's avatar

Ashes keep. Put them in a nice urn till 2028. . .

Vee's avatar

They came back with no problems.

Jane in NC's avatar

It would be very unwise for them to leave the country on the belief that their citizenship will guarantee their re-entry. This lawless administration is even now looking into denaturalizing millions of American citizens. Their best bet would be to wait until 2027 when a new administration takes office. A return ceremony will be just as heartfelt in a few years.

ELLA K's avatar

We won't get a new administration until January 2029. 😭😭😭😭

Edward J Huff's avatar

Well, were our prayers answered, in 2027, there would be a few over 67 democratic Senators and a supermajority in the House, and Harris would be speaker of the House. Vance would be impeached and convicted, then Trump impeached and convicted, and Harris would become President.

Unfortunately, this will not happen. 😢😢😭. Postdocs and untenured scientists will be accepting offers from abroad, even from China. We have rule by the people who didn't do homework.

Jane in NC's avatar

OH, but I love your dream scenario, Edward!

Jane in NC's avatar

Thanks for correction. Apparently, I'm not caffeinated enough!

Punkette's avatar

Lol, Jane! I swear, I cannot survive without my caffeine - via coffee and dark chocolate. Both will be tariffed soon … 🤬

Jane in NC's avatar

If have to take out a second mortgage, I will NOT do without my coffee, Punkette!

Punkette's avatar

Haha! Same here, sister! 😆

Nancy's avatar

Pray and weep for me, sister; caffeine has NO affect on me whatsoever... :~-(

They came back with no problems.

I read an article (I think in the NY Times) about an immigration attorney who is recommending that people traveling outside of the US carry a burner phone so that US Customs doesn't find anything "questionable." If they do go, they should think about doing just that.

Robot Bender's avatar

If there's is some urgency in scattering his ashes, they might consider shipping them home. Just a thought.

This is why I’m afraid my for my daughter when she comes home from Paris. She lives in L.A. and they’re scooping people up. She’s Latina but was born here in America. I was born here. It’s very scary out there if you don’t show them every document they want

Rhoda Ozen's avatar

Apparently I typed, “my for my daughter,” it should say my daughter

Nancy's avatar

That's okay; in Substack, you can always go back and Edit, not like in Daily Kos (the one thing I really don't like about DK that I LOVE about here :D).

But I hadn't heard much at all about anyone doing any "disappearing" here; both the L.A. county and city officials aren't going along with it, and even Newsom, that Kirk-lover (and I don't mean the guy from Star Trek :-/), isn't best pleased.

Still, yeah, I wouldn't trust anyone at any of our borders or entries of passage right now, for any reason. Not 'til we get this canker sore off our country's arse. X-P

This is a paper you can google to see other publications claiming this.

"I hope you wake up. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But eventually, you will see that you were conned."

H'mmm. . .

I can't help but recollect the MAGA people who were told by their doctors that they were dying from covid, and should say goodbye to their families - only to reply that no, they WEREN'T dying as there was "no such thing as covid. . ." - and then they promptly died. . .

Sometimes realisation comes just a little too late.

Katy Lea's avatar

Even if they see that they've been conned, most won't admit it. I live in Indiana and so many people have spent a lifetime listening to people like Rush Limbaugh tell them that the worst thing on Earth that a person could be is a Democrat.

Jane in NC's avatar

I remember all the signs being waved at the RNC convention when Trump was nominated for a second time. Ya gotta wonder what part of 'MASS DEPORTATION NOW!!' they didn't understand. During the first Trump admin, we saw the same salty tears being spilled by long-time undocumented immigrants and their families when dad, mom, or grandparents were hauled into concentration camps then deported. Did Verdi and Rey say a word, shed a single tear, when babies were separated from their mothers and disappeared by then-DHS Sec Kirstjen Nielsen? Have they reached out or had a kind word to say to Kilmar Abrego-Garcia's family?

I have enough basic human decency to feel sorry for the suffering of this family, but I also don't let them off the hook for their actions. THEY VOTED FOR THIS. Their magical thinking let them believe they'd never be on the receiving end of the cruelty they voted for. But Karma bats last.

Katy Lea's avatar

Exactly. They were perfectly fine with OTHER PEOPLE'S family members being shipped off to a foreign torture gulag on a minor weed charge.

Nancy's avatar

And if weed (which, to my mind, isn't any worse than alcohol [still not great, but you get the idea]) were actually, finally, decriminalized, it wouldn't even be an issue... X-P

Karma is, indeed, the clean-up hitter. :-/

Jan Frederick's avatar

"But you voted for it. You wanted it to happen to other people." That is it right there. The fact that their son was here legally is not important. What is important is that they wanted others to have to go through this. This is the lesson that ALL Magats need to learn. You never know when the tables will be turned on you, even if you believe it never can happen. Thank you, God! Amen! Awomen! Ramen!

Aquaman811's avatar

Everytime a MAGA cries about what this administration is doing to them, it’s like a kid burning their hand on a stove. “We told you it was hot, the light on the stovetop told you it was hot, common sense told you it was hot, yet you STILL put your hand on it.” FAFO!

Katy Lea's avatar

It's funny to me that Republicans think that Democrats want "illegals" here in order to win elections. People from Central and South America are used to despotic regimes like Trump's and are generally very conservative, hence, more likely to be GOP voters. Some like these folks in the post are more than happy to pull up the ladder behind them and it ultimately bites them in the ass.

Nancy's avatar

Exactly! Seems to me, a lot of them were fleeing from the /very same kind of thing/ they're voting for now?? I am confused... :-/

Vernie Love's avatar

I’m not in favor of anyone suffering, being the woke woman that I am, BUT if suffering will make people wake up, I’m okay with that. We need as many people as possible to wake up before the midterms. If people would realize that only Republicans will have Hollywood style ads. Democrats use their extra funds to help the people Republicans won’t.

I said for a long time that pain is the best teacher. Sometimes, it's the only teacher than can get through to people.

Terri Burney-Bisett's avatar

Guess they forgot that all of our families are immigrants, or descendants of immigrants. May have been a couple hundred + years ago, but immigrants nonetheless - Not counting my Native American grandfather, who, of course, grew up in the Rosebud Territory where they got pushed to when the whites took over.

Nancy's avatar

Even the First Nations here in the Americas (like my great-grandfather's ancestors) came here from somewhere else, probably Beringia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beringia), so good luck deporting me back there, Trumpty-Dumpty! :-/

Terri Burney-Bisett's avatar

Yes, back when there was a land bridge to get to Canada, maybe thru Alaska too

Scott Bernstein's avatar

Well yeah, there's that...........however, they are "owning the libs," so that must make it worth it. No pain, no gain, eh shit stains?

My daughter is engaged to a US-born citizen of immigrant parents from India. His parents are naturalized citizens. They were planning a Fall wedding in India this year. I was pumped to go because I've heard that Indian weddings are super jacked-up spectacular affairs. We're talking 3 days of non-stop partying. They canceled their India wedding plans for fear that her fiance and his parents may not be allowed back into the US after they return from India. So sad.

P J Johnston's avatar

This is truly sad no matter who it happens to. And it is sick and random and I have one Big Question why do the ICE people wear masks? They seem to LOVE their jobs of deporting innocent people from this country, one would think they would want notoriety for "doing their jobs" like maybe medals for the number of people they arrest and deport. (this is sarcasm which is the best I can do) AND It's NOT the way it should be in our country today, what the heck happened to inviting people to come here to make our country great?

Brenda's avatar

I'm not sure that they ARE ICE. I think that a lot of the people doing the "rounding up" are basically BOUNTY HUNTERS. No experience, etc., just MEAN!

Catt woman's avatar

I’m guessing a lot of them took part in 1/6 “festivities”. It’s probably on their resumes! I think that’s partly why DJT pardoned them. He now has his own private “army” that he knows will do anything for him.

P J Johnston's avatar

You could be right, after all I believe the ICE people most likely actually have to go through training to become what they are and Bounty hunters just work pretty much independently. Homan probably will take whatever he can find to do the job.

HMarquee's avatar

They came to this country and have enjoyed all that we have to offer. But their hate overrode everything else and they voted for that. They did not care about what he said about destroying our nation and that he himself is a criminal. All they cared about was how much those others needed to be removed

Don A in Pennsultucky's avatar

I worry about my friend and former cow-orker who was born in China and is a naturalized citizen. Her youngest child was born here but I'm not certain that her eldest was and that girl is an absolute genius!

Nancy's avatar

And someday your former co-worker and her children will probably have to leave, thus increasing our "Brain Drain" from the U.S. X-P

How does this sort of thing make America great, Mr. Trump...? :-/

Meredith Wendell's avatar

I’m sorry their son was detained. It does sound like overkill on ICE’s part. Nevertheless, you voted for The Orange Scourge and you can’t say you didn’t have any idea what he would do. He told you. Every one of you who voted for him is COMPLICIT in every bad, mean, intolerant, disrespectful and just plain awful thing he does. YOU voted for him, we ALL have to bear the consequences 😩

Mark Carpenter's avatar

Do I feel sorry for the son and his two children? Absolutely. This is a travesty of justice.

Do I feel sorry for the son’s parents, who voted for Trump knowing damn well what Trump was like and what Trump said he would do?

NOT. ONE. BIT.

EAT IT, TRUMPERS.

Nancy's avatar

To be fair-ish, the son might've voted for Trump, too; it didn't say in the article? But I'm guessing that might've been the case... :-/

Mark Carpenter's avatar

I would love to believe that people wouldn’t be so stupid as to do vote for someone who would expel them, but unfortunately we have the examples of Hitler and the Nazis, only to be put in concentration camps by the Nazis; and people who voted for Trump, only to be deported by the Trump SS (ICE).

Nancy's avatar

Well, to be fair, Hitler was originally appointed to be Chancellor by the right-wing government (President Hindenburg -- hmm; the first disaster with that name attached to it), and even when he held "elections" to "get back in" and "finish the job" later on, they never got more than 42% of the vote for the Nazis, even with very few/any opponents...
