I was at a meat locker in a very red county last week. I ordered an extra box of hamburger for their local food pantry.

The difference between MAGA and me is that I care about people who are suffering, even if I don’t know them and might not like them if I did

Lady Emsworth's avatar

Just waiting for trump to announce that he will be funding food pantries "in two weeks" because "the Democrats won't."

I hope Dump restores the over $1 billion he slashed from hunger relief programs and food banks, but am not holding my breath.

Trump cuts hit struggling food banks, risking hunger for low-income Americans

Argh! 😫 That $1B is long gone.

Yes ! And not only that - WE are the ones protesting and marching and calling the WH to reinstate THEIR benefits - the one they VOTED to cancel .

Katrina Ludvig's avatar

It's difficult to feel sorry for them when I'm almost certain they would vote for him a 4th time.

Devon Williams's avatar

I'm sure a lot of them don't mind suffering knowing that the black people are suffering more.

Dana Devalera's avatar

But they are not suffering more. Black people take care of each other through community and church. We will not let anyone go hungry. Maga is not a community. It's a mutual grievance and death cult.

Isabel ✝️'s avatar

We don’t need to feel sorry for them - I don’t . But we still need to help feed them. Because we’re not them . And that’s enough ❤️

DrVictoria Public Health Doc's avatar

These are also the same people who felt federal workers were nothing. During Trump I we had to endure their scorn and hatred while they praised him. Now they are in the same boat as Feds (without checks who cannot feed their own families) they deemed ‘useless’. Sad that the only way these folks understand is when their own ox is gored. MTG didn’t want the ACA, but now that her own children see their premiums balloon over 300% she’s now ready to pick up the insurance fight. Sick to the teeth of the whole lot of them- wish they would go to their own island and make the mess we know would ensue. Their official designation would be one we could take from Trump himself - “… just another Sh*thole country”.

Lisa Nystrom's avatar

He called this place a shithole country long before he started forcing the 💩 down our throats. He belly flopped into the DC swamp and took up residence.

Lady Emsworth's avatar

MAGA say that "liberal elites" despise them. I think most liberals actually pity them. Such ignorance, such fear - and now starvation. What a way to live.

Denise Palesch's avatar

It is “pity.”

Therapists sometimes say the patient needs to hit bottom before they can rise.

If majority of Republican MAGA has not bottomed out on November 1, they soon will be.

JP Connolly's avatar

Pitying people who've probably had a lousy education is condescending. Nailing them for ignorance, fear, starvation none of which are their fault? I can't go along with that. People live stressed lives, they're fed crap on the internet, TV, and they don't have time to sit down and read a "good book" and rise into goodness.

Carol M Myers's avatar

I agree that inadequate education is a key reason for people succumbing to the endless barrage of this administration's propaganda.

Jennifer Roussel's avatar

I have a friend from S.E. TX that I've been friends with since the 5th grade. She's apolitical but married for 50 yrs. to a MAGA. She married him at 16 (he was 21) and didn't graduate. He barely did but somehow avoided Vietnam. She came to visit me to see the play To Kill a Mockingbird and before we left, she asked me what it was about. I was surprised and asked if she'd read it in school and she replied, "I've never read a book in my life." I was stunned. I've read books since I learned to read. We went to the same school. What made the difference? It has to be the misinformation on the internet.

Lady Emsworth's avatar

If she's been married for 50 years, there's no way the internet is to blame for her not reading a book. There is a part of the population that thrives on "the culture of ignorance." If you're educated, or even read a book occasionally, that means you're one of "the elite." And "the elite" are something to be despised. It's a tribal thing. "People in OUR tribe don't read books or get educations!" And if you do - you risk being exiled from The Tribe - which is a truly frightening thought.

Carol M Myers's avatar

I find the categorization of those who become educated as "elite" frightening. It reminds me of what happened under the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia years ago where the "elite," that is, professionals such as doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc , were not only sent to "re-education" camps and used as forced farm labor, but were killed as well. That is the extreme this divisive mindset can come to. We the people must fight like all hell to get rid of this corrupt Trump administration that is poisoning the minds of the people who have been left behind in access to education, decent-paying jobs, health care, home ownership, and small business (esp. farmers) protection from conglomerate corporate buyout.

Robot Bender's avatar

I've met several people in my area (young and old) who have told me that they haven't read a book since high school. Meanwhile, we have so many books that we are running out of places for them.

There are also people who are proud of the fact that they've never been out of the state or even the county. 🤦

Jennifer Roussel's avatar

I was always exiled from the little mean "sundown town" that I was born in so it was nothing new to me and still isn't. I am self-educated because when I was offered a scholarship to university, my father ripped up the papers and told me women were good for 2 things and neither needed a degree. You're right about the internet but that's all of the reading that she does now. When I told her that I was an organ donor, she was terrified for me because she "read on the internet that a man woke up during an organ harvest." I took my time and explained. Three weeks ago, she danced with me and a group of witches for organ awareness. Baby steps...

Robot Bender's avatar

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who don't care until it's their turn.

"Just because you take no interest in politics doesn't mean politics won't take an interest in you." - Pericles

Lady Emsworth's avatar

Pitying people who've not had the chances I've had in life is "condescending"? I don't think so. What is you're definition of "pity"? I truly feel sorry for people who've been denied the chance of a decent education - what a loss to themselves - and the nation. How many good brains are left to rot because people never have a chance to rise? And you think I "nailed" them for for their ignorance, fear and starvation? What does "nailed" even mean? That I despise them for their despair? That is ridiculous.

One point I WILL agree with you on - people DON'T have time to sit down and read a good book - not once they're working and struggling to survive - while living in the richest country on the planet.

However, they DO have that time at one point in their lives- when they are at school. The American education system over the last fifty years has disintegrated to the point where vast swathes of the population get little or no benefit from it apart from the three R's. And that is a major reason why they, and, God help us, we, are in the situation we are in now.

Carol M Myers's avatar

After ridding our beloved America of the threat to freedom and democracy we have to focus again on those left behind. We need to somehow make corporations beholden and accountable again to the laborers, the workers who are the backbone and that has made them so profitable. Among many other necessary corporate reforms that need to be re-instituted, the obscene overpayment of CEOs at the expense of the workers-and society in general that is victimized by this kind of runaway capitalism which concentrates wealth rather than distributes it equitably by directing monies toward expanding opportunity for all- must be reigned in.

Tina Johnson's avatar

Schools are state funded, guided, and maintained.

Education failed in many areas of the country due to state and local greed and poor governance.

Misappropriation of funds (Brett Favre’s actions are only one example) has been rampant for generations.

Our country is ill and we need radical reform.

Nancy's avatar

There's gotta be a better way of funding public education than with property taxes (I'm not sure what would take its place, but it has to happen). This all but guarantees that people in poor areas are going to get a poor education, and undoubtedly remain poor and badly educated...making them ripe for con jobs. X-P

But yes, even in wealthy areas (maybe especially? more in the trough), skimming off the top is rampant. My mom was an active member in our local PTA, both as a teacher and a parent (if memory serves, she was President of the chapter at one point) and had begged and pleaded with the principal of our elementary school to release some discretionary funds to build a shelter over the lunch tables -- on asphalt, where we usually broiled (southern California, rich Red county) and risked our developing lungs to smog alerts; the only time we'd be allowed under a roof to eat would be during a heavy rainstorm, when we'd go to the gym.

He turned it down, saying there wasn't any "educational purpose" to it. Those same exact funds, pretty much to the penny, were then used later on a very important "educational project": remodeling his office. X-P

Tina Johnson's avatar

Seems they did something with the Lottery to raise $ for schools?

Don’t know if it worked?

Yes there has to be a better way…

Bet there have been scads of good ideas buried for reasons such as remodeling an office.

I’m so cal raised, too. Whole family of red heads.

So true. Ignorance is the basis of so many of the problems in this country

Denise Palesch's avatar

I define “pity” using a denotative definition.

Pity is

“Sympathy and sorrow aroused by the misfortune or suffering of another.

A matter of regret.”*

Anyone reading expressions of sympathy and sorrow as patronizing, may be voicing another dictionary’s definition—possibly even using a connotative definition— based on their world view and own experiences.

Conservative elites hate them too.

Nancy's avatar

Meh, I think they generally sneer at them, but "love" how easily manipulated they can be. X-P

What dismays me is if they read one book at all, it may just be the Bible, but the King James version (God, I didn't think You had ANY influence over that committee ol' King Jimmy hired...), which is pretty awful, imho. Even then, they're taught the worst parts of it by awful people with their own agendas, which rarely would match up with Jesus'. :-/

Dana Devalera's avatar

Part of the last 10 year tantrum is that they think black people get all the attention and they get none because they are the chosen forgotten people in flyover country ( which I believe the media not the Dems coined). They are ignored by the conservative elite because they embarrass the con elite and are only of use to be manipulated and used for grievance like you said.

That guy received $2,800? What time period was that for? What in Your name is the size of his family?

A family of 4 receives $975 per month in the contiguous 48 and DC, according to two other sources.

https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/recipient/eligibility

Check it out, especially the note about how Democrats are causing the food-subsidy problem and how Democrats also want to give healthcare to “illegal aliens.”

I’ve seen this note elsewhere on our government websites.

Leu2500's avatar

I googled, & AI says the average monthly benefit for a person is $187. This cross checks with the ~$6 per day benefit other sources have quoted. The average household benefit is $356, which means there are a lot of small households (for ex, seniors).

If he’s getting $2K plus, that’s over 10 people. Someone should have kept his pants zipped. More likely he’s lying.

Denise Palesch's avatar

That guy lied?

Was it John Barron?

And some massive informality. Checking that link and that "message," it sounds like it was written by a petulant college freshman, hacked off that he didn't make it into his first pick of "bro!" fraternities. X-P

Every other special message I've ever seen on a government website before Trump 2.0 was clear and concise, yet serious and formal, as if professionals who knew what they were doing in that department had written it.

Trump and Repugnants are throwing out lies and absurdities every day about how this crisis is the Democrats' making and that only they can fix it. So far, Americans aren't buying it. I sure hope this strategy continues to fail.

Sharon P's avatar

Two things: first, who gets $2,500 in SNAP benefits? He must have eight kids or something! Second, the guy shaved his eyebrows off, like WTF?! That’s what votes for President Criminal!

Jennifer Roussel's avatar

Maybe his cat died. That's what the Egyptians did.

Sharon P's avatar

In America you’ve lost your mind. Look at the guy that shot Gabbie Giffords.

I meant it as a joke. I think we all need to laugh sometimes.

Amen! :D

Or as the Egyptians would say: "In-un-ma'a!" (Truly it is!)

There a people cheering on the loss of SNAP benefits for poor people. What those people don't understand is the real value SNAP provides to the community as a whole. For every $1 SNAP pays out, the community gets $1.80 in returns. There are also grocery stores who depend on that money in order to stay afloat. Without SNAP, other consumers will have to eat the cost increase. Literally and figuratively. Oh yeah, and what kind of soulless person cheers on other people starving? The moral compass for this country is now at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Even Jacque Cousteau wouldn't be able to find it.

BE Anderson's avatar

Perfect interpretation of what is going on. I might also add that in the midst of this crisis, the taxpayers just shelled out another 67 million for him to fly home to Mar a Lago instead of staying in town to do his job. But, there was a roaring 20s party to get to. He may as well just stay there. He doesn't do anything in Washington except host people and parties. He can do that from Florida.

Punkette's avatar

Hang on a sec. If the average SNAP disbursement per person is $187 a month, how does that magat qualify for a whopping $2,800/mo? Does he have 10 kids? Hmmm. 🤔 And now he’s whining that it’s been reduced to $350, which is still twice what most recipients get. Cry me a river, pendejo.

Leu2500's avatar

The felon skipped work Fri - he flew to Mar A Lago in the morning - for a halloween party. A Great Gatsby themed halloween party. Sickening.

& he has a MAGA Inc dinner tonight. So he can grift more money.

Robot Bender's avatar

"Let them eat cake." (Antoinette didn't say that, but it fits.)

Sarah3000's avatar

Never in the history of this country has a President and his Congress intentionally starved people to get their way. I hope everyone is aware that this a manufactured crisis. I hope they know that the emergency funds are being purposefully withheld in order to "Own the libs" and get this Big Ugly Bill passed. And that the fight is literally starving people in order to get the Democrats to cave to take away the subsidies to keep healthcare affordable for the average American.

Nancy's avatar

The Big Ugly Bill already passed, but most of it won't be obvious until the mid-terms (interesting timing, that). The Big Ugly Funding Bill, yeah, that's still in the air. X-P

I still don't understand how anyone could buy that it's our fault, when they know damn well the Rethuglicans have the White House, Congress, and the Supreme Court? :-/

(And didn't you love how ol' Mango Mussolini NOW wants to kill the filibuster, that Democrats are using it...? ;->)

Sarah3000's avatar

I meant to say the final resolution for the Big Ugly Bill.

The government runs out of money on Nov. 24th. They will need the Dems to sign off. Maybe then they'll be forced to come to the table and negotiate. But I'm not holding my breath.

And yes, they timed it to hit just after the midterm elections.

I hadn't heard about Trump trying to kill the filibuster. At this point nothing surprises me.

klotzilla's avatar

I know this sounds cruel, but MAGA needs to feel the pain. They've gleefully chortled at the many bastardish things TrumpCo. has done to others. Let them eat this bitter harvest they've sowed.
