Now more than ever we need to stay on target--protecting the mid-term vote.

Mary Busch's avatar

We need to hang this disastrous "We're All Gonna Die" bill and this baseless war around the necks of every Republican running for re-election during the midterms.

John S. Way's avatar

We should be so lucky as to make it that far.

Rona's avatar

Congress better start re-growing some balls real quick.

John S. Way's avatar

They absolutely should. We need to round up Mike Johnson, rewire him and install a spine.

Rona's avatar

Don't know if that would do any good. He's a hard-core Christian Nationalist who, like Lady Lindsey 'Flop-lomat' Graham, believes fomenting a war in Syriana will lead to the long-awaited 'Rapture', where all *good* Christians are sucked up to heaven to enjoy their golden toilets.

Rona's avatar

Quoting John S. Way, "We should be so lucky..."

Nancy's avatar

Only if it could be done without destroying the rest of us, or the other 99%: the other species of life on this poor beleaguered planet. What'd they ever do to deserve this shite? :-/

The conservatives in America have gotta be the stupidest mfkers. Did they learn nothing from the morasses of Iraq and Afghanistan? The Soviets getting their asses kicked in Afghanistan? Getting involved with Islamic nations, in an already unstable region, always poised on the edge of exploding into religiously based bloodlust? Starting wars with no exit strategy? Trying to facilitate regime changes that will add to the instability and violence? They never learn. Damn, such jingoism has never helped anyone. WAKE UP, damned rethuglicans/right wing kooks.

Nancy's avatar

Yeah; remember back before there was ISIS/ISIL/ISwhatever-it-is-today? There was stability of a sort in the region, with Hussein (who was probably in there in the first place because he liked the oil companies), and the minute we went to war against him, wrongly, and deposed him ("That'll stop THAT instability in the Middle East! :D Peace forever now! :D"), everything went up for grabs (including that huge stack of cash that just strangely vanished, never to be accounted for again...). X-P

Much of the clusterfuck of that region, Iraq-Iran-Afghanistan, is our doing. From installing an asshole American puppet in the Shah, thereby earning the enmity of Iran for decades to come, to then backing Saddam in the Iran-Iraq war as a way to get back at Iran for taking our embassy people hostage, to arming and training the Mujaheddin against the Soviets in Afghanistan, only to drop them like a jilted lover when the Soviets slunk away, which led a young Osama bin Laden to form Al Queda in anger for that slight, to 9/11, to Bush 41 launching an unnecessary and illegal war on Iraq, who had nothing to do with 9/11, to then disbanding the Baath Party, some of whose high officials went over to join ISIS, here we are. Our meddling has unsurprisingly pissed off a lot of people in those nations. All because of petroleum. If there was no petroleum in that region of the world, we would ignore them completely.

Nancy's avatar

Us and the British; they had stock in the petroleum in the region as well, back when the Shah was shoved in...after we'd gotten rid of some dude that wanted to, o horrors, put the power of his country's petroleum reserves back into the hands of his people? Gasp! He was very popular with the people; the Shah, not so much, so for at least a generation or two, things were brewing, yeah... :-/

Doris's avatar

I disagree. I think he started a war because he was embarrassed and angry at being laughed at about his parade. That’s how this hyperactive toddler in mental decline thinks.

God's avatar

Did you read the article?

Doris's avatar

Yes. I stand by it. You did mention the parade, but I believe it was the primary reason for the strike. Not Musk. Not even the ratings (although that was part of it, perhaps). The long, boring (even Trump fell asleep) military joke of a parade that he could not leave (imagine how painful that was for someone with his attention span!) happening at the same time that millions across the globe stood up and shouted how much they HATE him. I’m a little surprised he didn’t launch a nuke.

God's avatar

I went with Musk for the headline because it was the best headline. That doesn’t mean I think that’s any bigger of a reason than the others I listed.

Lisa Nystrom's avatar

All of your reasons are valid, O Omniscient one… I tend to think #3 (tanking approval=start a war) threw the most weight behind this decision. He knows his party is going down in flames the next election, and rightly so.

God's avatar

You’re right. I should have went with that one as the lede.

Lisa Nystrom's avatar

In the end it’s all about his flipping Grand Canyon-sized ego. Have we figured out how to fix “stupid” yet? Love your posts, God. Keep up the good fight!❤️

HyeUp's avatar

A common thread among all possible choices for this invitation to WWIII is that all of these slights are so very public. Perhaps a dignified, subdued but heartfelt parade might have been appreciated more by everyone but the yam. But he over-hyped it, demanded quantity over quality, forced attention to himself…

The HUGE numbers of people nationwide speaking out was a very public demonstration of our contempt for a man who must be adored to survive, all the while destroying the structure of the institutions that the population depends on. He expected the worship no matter what he has done.

The ratings don’t have as much affect on him because he can fall back on the failed, lying, corrupt press. You know how much they hate him! They are always standing in his way!! But the people can see the graphs and numbers without the MSM broadcasting only selected parts.

What a knuckle-dragging mouth breather!

Nancy's avatar

I blame the CEOs of the MSM, the leaders, more than the people. Good people have, sadly, resigned, leaving the positions open to be filled by...oh, let's just call them.../ring/-lickers, who will agree with the CEOs' insistence that Ratings Uber Alles. :-/

Samantha's avatar

I agree. I would add to that Stephen Miller and his hate filled visions for a 'perfect,' according to his definition, world, whispering in Taco's ear and encouraging T's greed, hate and rage.

Nancy's avatar

One proper noun word, unless you're speaking in general terms (Gríma Wormtongue) ...but either way works. ;-)

DR Darke's avatar

Trump's parade being a flop, and the anti-Trump protests having the huge number HE wanted, was also a factor listed in God's post—maybe not the first one, but He going in date order with the oldest Trump humiliation first.

His pride forth before the fall.

P J Johnston's avatar

Perhaps you maybe right! Please remind me again why so many people put this megalomaniac in the WH!

Nancy's avatar

A) People are stupid and have the memory and attention span of goldfish.

B) Just to be on the safe side, Trump had all sorts of "very smart computer people, who do the computer thing" who had apparently guaranteed him "all the votes ever needed" by July 2024... X-P

Samantha's avatar

That sorry excuse of both a human and a man has been committing crimes his whole life, and now he has graduated to crimes against humanity AND the planet. I am very concerned that, with what passes for a government now essentially doing little but sucking his mushroom, he may go for the nuclear option in a final orgy of hate, rage and disappointment. He is now more atavistic then ever before. And, frankly, he is not really calling the shots. Stephen Miller is both a Hitler and a Goebbels wannabe, and a profoundly hate filled and evil little thing. He is the one whispering, like Wormtongue, in Trumps ear. It is critical that he be removed, legally, from the body politic, like the cancer he is.

Linda Sanford Wirt's avatar

Possibly. He has several times revealed his intent to be king and that his offspring will succeed him.

Nancy's avatar

Well, probably either Barron or Ivanka; he doesn't like Tiffany and hardly mentions her at all, ever, and knows his other sons are complete doofii (plural of doofus). X-P

Samantha's avatar

Yup, that would seem to be one of his reasons. I suspect that martial law and boots on every street in America will be next, along with concentration-style camps for everyone who is not them or them adjacent. I feel sick.

DR Darke's avatar

...I wonder if THAT will finally be enough for the Schumer Democrats in Congress to finally stop sitting on their hands and doing something.

Probably not, given Schmuck Schumer *wanted* this because Netanyahu did.

Samantha's avatar

Not likely, I fear. He may have wanted this because of religion. Like the Christians trying to make this a Christian nation - even knowing the Constitutional stance on separation of church and state - he may be trying to protect what he sees as his religious roots. If so, he made a bad choice to put his country second in this.

DR Darke's avatar

Schumer has a history of doing that—I can't find a link for it, but in the early 2000s, I think, he went on a lengthy rant on the Senate floor, demanding a law that declared ANY criticism of Israel, at all, as "hatespeech" and thus not Constitutionally protected. I was aghast, since he WAS one of my Senators back then and I was already unhappy with how Israel was treating the Palestinians.

I made an online comment asking if he was the Senator from New York or Tel Aviv (which was Israel's capital back then), and I'm unable to bring myself to support him ever since because, far as I'm concerned? He's an Agent of a Foreign Power masquerading as an American Senator.

Even when he (mildly) criticizes Israel he's quick to defend it, like here where he said what Israel was going in Gaza wasn't a "genocide"! (Sorry it's a Reddit post, but I no longer have a NY TIMES subscription.)

Samantha's avatar

"Not a genocide," huh? So...um...what DOES he call children, parents and just folk being gunned down by Israeli forces when they try to get food? After the Israelis told them where the food was? And cutting off water and medical care? A Teddy bears picnic?!? After the evil and horror experienced during WWII, you would think that people would see the needs and sufferings of others and try to make things better. Sigh.

DR Darke's avatar

Too many people looked at The Holocaust, and took "Never Again" to mean, "I'll do it to YOU first!"

Call Dr. Strange, I want off this Universe....

Samantha's avatar

An additional comment. Trump has announced that, if Iran retaliates at all, he will go to a much larger tactic to eliminate the threat. Any guesses as to what he means? Biological, chemical...no, he likes the big show of big booms, and the fires that go with them. I vote nuclear. After all, he has been itching for big kills all along. I really hope that the right-wingers are really happy that they may very well have destroyed their kids and grandkids future. Sorry, young ones. Not your fault.

Cynthia Christiansen's avatar

Project 2025 playbook has been itching for a war to put the screws in.

Samantha's avatar

Absolutely! This time, we have a "leader" who seeks total domination of and submission by an entire planet. And his foul playbook has been in the making for decade...probably rooted in the attempted takeover of our government by Nazi's and their supporters around the beginning of WWII. They wanted FDR executed.

Nancy's avatar

I actually doubt it was the Nazis; the people mentioned by the hero Marine dude they'd tried to recruit to do the job (with a promise of being made "co-President" or some such) were all like Fortune 500 types, who were bitching about the New Deal and every other thing FDR was trying to do to get the country back on its feet again. Just being rich oligarch fucks would be reason enough.

As for the Nazis infiltrating, apparently WE WERE THE ONES THAT INFLUENCED THEM: https://www.cracked.com/article_23252_5-awful-ways-america-influenced-hitler-without-knowing-it.html

Laura Haglund's avatar

IMHO a lot of y'all are missing the mammoth in the room.

Piss off Iran because it makes a great excuse to stomp on us with an iron miltary boot. No need for actual retaliation, even. Just keep hollering, "Oh, look, terrorists everywhere!" and there goes the last shred of freedom. Pigface (and his quietly snickering in the background backers and handlers) will sacrifice anyone and anything to superglue their tyranny on our backs . . . behind our backs.

Suddenly the quotidian quirks of working with the public in a grocery store seem like no big deal. 😳 Good God. Much as I do not like the probability of retaliation, I cannot really blame Iran, either. What the hell, Donnie Douchebag.

Samantha's avatar

Oh, he is counting on Iran retaliating, since it will give him the pretext to declare martial law, cancel elections, arrest and kill protesters and upend our Constitution.

Karyn Milos's avatar

Oh, yes. My WHAT THE HELL still stands, all the more so.

One more thing - I am surprised and heartbroken over the fact that OUR military is obeying illegal, immoral and unethical actions, ordered by a "man" whom they know to be sick, evil, twisted, criminal and insane. Shame on those who obey...who comply. Shame. Dear and much-loved God & Co, You, and we, need to step it up. I may be in the final stretch of my life, but I want to do whatever I can to help end this madness.
