Yeah the sugar cube and oral versions led to an unbelievable decline. I was one of 3 1950s siblings. Bank then parents always feared polio. Decades of memory fade across generations. My grandparents were in a family of 12 in Roxbury. Some casualties in those days.

My aunt who is now 95 had polio as a young married mother. She still has problems with one of her legs. These anti vac people are so dangerous. Mitch McConnell is upset about it too. The good news is he may doom his own nomination if he continues on the anti polio vaccine train.

I remember friends being off school for a year - then coming back with one leg - or two - in braces and/or on crutches. I remember friends who didn't come back at all. And being told not to ask his Mom where Charlie was. . .
The vaccine has been so successful, we no longer have herd immunity. If Kennedy gets his wish - next Christmas, choosing a kid's present will be easy - a pair of crutches or an iron lung.

Does anyone else know someone who contracted polio before the first vaccine was introduced in 1957? I was 5 years old at the time, and my entire family was able to get both the Salk and Sabin vaccines as soon as they were rolled out in California.
A dear friend of mine was not so fortunate. His name was Peter Belton, and he was hands down the most brilliant lawyer I ever knew. He contracted polio in 1954, shortly before enrolling in Harvard Law School, and never walked again. He lived 53 years with the horrific physical damage caused by polio, and finally succumbed to post-polio syndrome in 2007, after an impressive career at the California Supreme Court. My father had polio as a child and only came out of it with a r. leg much smaller and shorter but it could have been so much worse! When we were in Lexington, MI, my sister and I became Polio Pioneers by getting the very first shots. Dad put us at the head of the line to make sure.
