So, I somewhat agree with your point that ads could have highlighted some of Harris' positions more, but I also think it was important in this race to give people who usually vote Republican to vote Democrat, and found those ads compelling. My complaint is that the ads overall did not emphasize all the gains made in 4 years by Biden and the Dems. Maybe it was a tough call since Harris was not the central figure if all that Biden helped to pass or put into motion. What I want to know is how ads filled with such nasty rhetoric and outright lies get on the air? An ad for cereal that was filled with misinfo ("No sugar! No calories! No artificial flavors!") would never get on the air, so why are political ads able to spread such awful mis/disinformation as if all of it is the, uh, God's honest truth??
Political ads are protected by law. You're allowed to say whatever you want. Democrats take the high ground, but this is a mistake. We're bringing butterflies to a gun fight.
Winning over Republican voters must never ever be tried again. It's like trying to sell ice to Eskimos.
I'd like to repeal that law. It makes no sense and it helps people who don't know any better (who get their "facts" from bogus news sources and/or don't follow politics and the world in general to keep up with what's going on) to think if an ad claims something, it must be true.
I questioned the nasty add thing recently and someone responded to me that in politics, it is considered "free speech". I had a lot of great billboard ideas during the campaign, but I don't think the Democratic party would have taken them. Sometimes I think the Democrats are just not tough enough.
Have we ever? I’m a “peace and love” Democrat. It’s my nature, but I’m not proud of it. I just want everyone to get along, be nice to each other and be friends. I realize that I come across as a Pollyanna, and it embarrasses me even while I’m doing it. But, that being said, I know that the winners in our species are the ones who go for the jugular.
When it comes for advocating for peace and goodwill, I’m pretty good at talking the talk. I’m not sure I have it in me to actually fight. I guess I may find out, though.
It seems like since the 1990's (Newt Gingrich) the Republican party has gotten nastier and nastier. Up to the time Trump got involved with the party, there was, at least, some compromise. Now it's just a rejection by Republicans of ANYTHING that the Democrats want, even if it means screwing their own constituents. The sad part is their constituents don't even seem to see this, or they are ignoring it because they have taken on the same attitude as the Republicans. I think it is sad.
They are NOT Republicans anymore they are the MAGA party, and the reason Liz Cheney and her dad and numerous other REPUBs supported Kamala was to try and get their party back to the way it was before DJT. Republicans used to be fiscal conservatives but they are no more, they used to have "moderates" DJT the first time around chased them out as well.
I agree 100%. I believe that unless those "old school" Republicans vote for Democrats down the ticket from now on, they don't have a chance of getting their party back. That may not work, either. Things look pretty bleak to me.
There was an ad in Philadelphia that ran during an Eagles game which captured the essence of “Fuckin’ Philly and we don’t care”. The sweat was bleeped but there was no mistaking what word was covered up. It was very powerful. We needed those types of ads across the nation to resonate with the electorate in a way that was understandable.
We NEED campaign FINANCE REFORM Badly! Don't expect to get it from the incoming administration, but just like we need GUN REFORMS we also NEED the ABOVE and need to get the "Dark Money" out of Politics!
God, I have a question for you. Are you rethinking the concept of "free will" yet? Because it has NOT served us well! If stupid, mean, evil people were not allowed to vote, I'd not bring this up. But they are! So, respectfully, either rid us of these mamering canker blossoms or help us find a way to identify them so that we can take them off the voter rolls. I apologize for being so [seemingly] disrespectful, but having that fetid-flounced dungfly back in the White House has rid me of my usual stellar comportment. Thank you.
You know, I have spent a lot of time being mad at those people, rightfully so. Righteously so.
But the sad truth remains, we need to win them over. I believe I'm just stupid enough that I can speak to them. I'm not trying to write college research papers here. I'm not insecure about my intelligence.
I don’t think it’s possible to win them over. When that “joke” came out about Puerto Rico being a floating island of garbage, I texted my brother who has PR friends. Prior to that, I let him know that I was concern about TFG’s health (not in a snarky manner), and his response was that Kamala is a dummy. He said that TFG won with a diverse collation [sic] of people and that Harris ran on Hate Trump and failed. Didn’t TFG run on Hate Harris? 🙄 Needless to say, I’m not traveling home for Thanksgiving, even though my mother is 93 and this might be her last celebration. My brother is (sort of) dead to me.
Teri, first of all, I am giving you a virtual hug. I was the sole and primary care giver to my parents.(who are now deceased) for twelve years. I say "sole" because my only sibling has been estranged from me for over 36 years. And he certainly wasn't going to ask if I needed any help. He kicked them to the curb and I returned the favor. I finally realized he was not worth my time nor my self-respect. It was a matter of principle and it was worth the price. Now that there is no chance of his being needed, he wants to "meet up". Not a chance. We need to think well enough of ourselves to demand the respect we deserve. We can't give it if we don't get it. You already hold your mother in your heart. Honor her by acknowledging your worth.
I live in a blue bubble inside a deep red state. On Sunday I went to church where I know many blue bubbles exist. Three or four times people asked me how I was. I said the previous week had been very hard for me. They all asked what happened. I tried to be truthful and circumspect at the same time. Not one understood I was talking about the election. Not one. When I explained my candidate lost even the ones who voted for Harris were unaffected.
I left church sick to my stomach. Most of the people in my church are generations of Republicans. I get that. The people at my church who voted blue probably fear making an issue of their loss because of family voting for that man. I must not have been loud enough about my position. I am a Boomer, a niche who supposedly chose that man. So my friends didn’t know which party I supported, I guess. Maybe they thought electing that man was no worse than other elections.
I don’t know or understand, but God, I am trying hard to live the second great commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves. Right now I accept I don’t have to like them to love them. You are as easy to love as is your namesake. Thank you for being you. 😞
I am a Democratic Socialist, so I vote with Democrats, but don't love what they do as a party.
The Progressives should be more prominent. Enough of this centrist crap. No one loves the Cheney's. Liz has a soul and lost her seat because of it, but make no mistake. The conservatives are about individuals keeping their money and making more., not about taking care of our society as a whole.
Don't get me wrong, Biden's domestic legislation pulled us up from a horrible situation, the economic problems of the pandemic. He should be well remembered for that.
Time for us rabble rousers to take charge. We're loud, we are fearless and we give a shit about people. We aren't the rich folks.
"Nice guys finish last". That is what I thought of when I read this letter, God. I think you can be nice and still be tough, but you have to really lay the truth out there. Hit them everywhere you can. Have a comeback for everything they say, especially the lies. You have to be a "truth bully". To counter Chump, you would have to be a mean and nasty "truth bully". Is there anyone in the Democratic party that fits that description? And thank you, God for the pep talk. I needed it. Amen!
Right now, for example, while Trump is planning an executive order to install his loyalists at top levels in the military, Democrats are writing letters to their senators. Not inspiring confidence.
God, you have hit on the right issues explaining why the Democratic Party was not able ensure a win for its candidate : not insisting on a party platform which did not allow for waffling and allowing Citizens United to stay in place with the crazy Supreme Court opinion that says that corporations are people and political contributions are subject to free speech protection, guaranteeing that the candidate who has the ability to attract the corporations that have the largest treasure chests will drive election results. Didn’t we all see Trump promise leaders of highly profitable fossil fuel companies that if they would benefit from deregulation of their industry, ensuring significant profit increases for them, with total disregard of the inevitable worsening of our climate along with lessening of conditions which are critical to human, animal, and plant life. Fortunately for me, my days on this planet far exceed my remaining ones, and it is likely that I will not see the full impact of selling out to the fossil fuel industry, but I have little hope for the young adults and their children that they will be spared. When will Citizens United be challenged and overturned? We are long past any reasonable deadline, still hoping for a good outcome for our children and their children and grandchildren. What is needed to wake us up to reality?
Here we go again. This is what the Dems always do after a loss—navel gazing and self-blame. Meanwhile the MAGAts are laughing their asses off at us, and I don’t blame them.
It’s not true that the Dems disrespect the working class. Biden constantly talks about his dad being a used-car salesman and growing up in Scranton, and Harris never failed to tell the story about her mom sitting at the kitchen table trying to figure out which bills she could afford to pay.
Meanwhile Trump never mentions his background, but raises taxes for the middle class and cuts them for the rich. But sure, we’re the ones disrespecting the middle class.
I blame the sanewashing by the mainstream media, the false equivalencies made by reporters, and the voter suppression and the extensive Russian disinformation campaign that WE KNOW FOR A FACT ACTUALLY HAPPENED, yet no one seems to mention it. Not to mention the decades-long efforts by the Repugnantklans to populate local school boards and dumb down the curriculum (remember civics classes, anyone?)
Sorry/not sorry to disagree with God, but I’ve never been a fan of the Abrahamic religions. 😉
I agree with everything you said. But I still think we need to figure out what is going on at the DNC that they think running as republicans is the right idea. The people who decide strategy there lack the courage of their convictions.
George Carlin : [about why people elected and reelected Bill Clinton] The American people like their bullshit right up front, where they can get a good, strong whiff of it. Clinton might be full of shit, but at least he lets you know it. Dole tried to hide it, didn't he? Dole kept saying, "I'm a plain and honest man." Bullshit! People don't believe that. What did Clinton say? He said, "Hi, folks! I'm completely full of shit, and how do you like that?" And the people said, "You know something? At least he's honest!"
Act in haste, repent at leisure. This where we find ourselves. God, only you know why Biden decided to run to begin with. That decision truncated the time available and inspired the kind of campaign Harris ran. It's understandable and unfortunate. Personally, I think the Democratic Party (except for Obama--perhaps) has been in the ditch for decades. But I'm not as old as God, and certainly not all-knowing, so what do I know? Love one another. Face the beast, don't let him/they get away from being documented. As Oat Willie says, Onward through the fog.
So, I somewhat agree with your point that ads could have highlighted some of Harris' positions more, but I also think it was important in this race to give people who usually vote Republican to vote Democrat, and found those ads compelling. I'm reminded of the political cartoon where an R is talking to a D across a wide gap.
R: You take two steps, I'll take two steps
D: takes two steps forward
R: takes two steps backward
Understanding them doesn't mean becoming them.
I questioned the nasty add thing recently and someone responded to me that in politics, it is considered "free speech". I had a lot of great billboard ideas during the campaign, but I don't think the Democratic party would have taken them. Sometimes I think the Democrats are just not tough enough.
Exactly!

Standing in opposition to evil is the only thing I want in any candidate.. gosh I'm such a dreamer. Probably even eligible for deportation.

Good afternoon God.
Good post today.
I am a Democratic Socialist, so I vote with Democrats, but don't love what they do as a party.

Some of us are really old.
Oh yeah thanks.
If the democrats move to the right I will drop out. Maybe we do need a few more parties.
They already did, and want to do so even more,
"Nice guys finish last". That is what I thought of when I read this letter, God. I think you can be nice and still be tough, but you have to really lay the truth out there. Exactly.

We need to bring back the New Deal style democrats. That’s the only way.
AMEN!

Even now I am being attacked on this site for expressing this opinion. We are not allowed to utter the truth.
Isn't it in the Bible that no good deed goes unpunished? If not they need to update that shit.
I still don’t understand why anyone - college educated or not - would vote against their own interests.
Here we go again. This is what the Dems always do after a loss—navel gazing and self-blame. Meanwhile the MAGAts are laughing their asses off at us, and I don’t blame them.

Enabling an actual genocide is not respecting the working class, which embodies universal values of common decency too!

I’ve been donating to Wolf-PAC, which seeks to get big money out of politics by actually *amending the constitution* (the 28th amendment).
But I have reservations about their approach.
It would supposedly bypass the courts and legislative branch and have bipartisan appeal.
But it sounds like a really steep hill to climb that requires a constitutional convention, 75% majority vote, etc.
Here’s the link: wolf-pac.com
Thoughts? 🤷🏻♀️
You're talking sense, God. I sure hope people will take your advice, follow your lead,
stop whining about losing, and start activating. Maybe start with undoing Citizens United.
I’m actually already being attacked by people who didn’t even read what I said.
Oh by the way, let's put Matt Gaetz in charge of upholding laws in the US. Appoint him as AG.
Trump just put a sharp stake into the heart of justice.
Dems are less than useless, God/J 2028 is where it's at <3
