From what I hear, the Webster dictionary that was first published in the brand new, fledgling United States /deliberately/ had words changed from their "ew, British English! Icky!!" spelling. ;)
That's how we get things like "worshiping" here (and I get yelled at by Spellcheck when I spell it "worshipping"; I have to tell it to learn that form), when leaving off the second 'p' would mean it's pronounced "wohr-SHIPE-eeng"...
On the other hand, I'm a big fan of "z" versus "s" for a lot of things...like "criticize" vs. "criticise," amirite? ;)
