I canceled all my Amazon accounts instead. Better IMHO not to cause the good journalists and the 18 strong opinion writers who openly criticized their "Owner/Massah" to lose their jobs. It was not a hard decision to cut "quick and dirty" online shopping out of my life. I can live without putting quick and easy money in Bezos's pockets.
Thanks for that tip, KHKate! Having succumbed to the convenience of shopping online during the pandemic, I got in the habit of buying books at barnesandnoble.com, thinking it would help keep open several brick-and-mortar B&N stores near where I live, and where we always used to buy hard copy books for our kids and for gifts. (I'm not sure if that was entirely true.)
I'm not really a reader of hard copy books myself, but have for many years now purchased multiple hard copies of progressive authors' books just to help support their livelihoods, and have given them away as gifts to my kids, friends, co-workers who still like to hold a book in their hands while reading. More recently, I've donated a lot of the extra hard copies to our local nonprofit "friends of the library" organization, which they resell at a discount to help keep our public libraries open and in good repair.
So glad you wrote that. I can't think of a day without reading the excellent reporting of the staff and editorials by Eugene Robinson. Cancelling Amazon will have the additional value of a) getting us out of our houses and b) doing with less.
Thank you, God, for even more details. I was absolutely shattered to hear that Dr. Phil spoke at that despicable rally. Oprah must also be heartbroken. I’m glad the NYTimes is publishing some good stuff against Don-Old lately.
Dear God, We beseech you to give us the strength to cancel all things purchased from Amazon, any web or Internet services delivered through Amazon Web Services, foods from Whole Foods, etc., and anything else from any other business that Mr. Bezos owns so we don’t have to hand over our Democratic Republic to the unchristian nationalists who want a fascist dictatorship and have clearly started their plans to throw out the constitution and undermine the rule of law.
I am one of the 200K. I cancelled on the second day following the Post billionaire owner's debacle. I'm angry and feel betrayed by one more institution. But now I am considering re-upping my subscription because we definitely need the sun to shine on all the political shenanigans going on. We very much need to support newspapers, both local and national, who are our eyes and ears to the truth. The Post has definitely lost some of my trust, but many fine Post journalists have been speaking out and Carrying On. I need to think on this awhile...I have until November 20th when my subscription runs out. This paper is pocket change for Bezos. The real cancellation should be to Amazon.
Me too. I just posted something very similar to your post.
I can't quit Amazon entirely but you can bet there will be no more impulse buys, nor purchases of things I can buy locally even if it takes a drive and time to find them.
Count me in on the people who cancelled my subscription to WaPo. I’m going to next start working on my reliance on Amazon and get that minimized or cancelled.
When the independent press stops doing its job because the rich and powerful will find fault, it is failing its role in society to shine a light on bad behavior and lies. The first thing despots do is close all independent news media. Patrick Soon-Shiong and Jeff Bezos are foolish to think that by not supporting Kamala, TFG will leave them alone. They have taken the first step in kowtowing to a wanna be dictator before he is one. Shame on them for not understanding their most important role in democracy. In the words of the Wapo slogan, “Democracy dies in darkness”. Say it with me, “Irony.”
We have to go after Amazon! WAPO was muffled by Bezos. Remember - the editors wanted to endorse Kamala but the bald, anticipatory obedient bald mushroom stopped them. Want to call out the bad ass here? - go after Prime! God Damn Jeff Bezos!
I think it's great that people are doing something to show their outrage at the Post's decision. The drop in subscribers is great publicity for our side. I worry, though, if Bezos won't use this as an excuse to lay off Post employees who have zero influence on editorial decisions. It won't be even register a blip on his personal finances, but he seems like the vengeful type. We can agree to vote with our wallets, but the most important thing (IMO) is to get out there and vote. If you've already voted, like me, you can get in touch with your local campaign office and volunteer. The Dems here are offering free rides to polls for those without transportation, for example. It's not too late to canvass or volunteer on phone banks.
Amen. And here’s to another 200,000!

A Heathen in Cali
P.S. Buy your books from bookshop.org. A percentage of their sales goes to independent bookstores.
