Took my son out there to look at New Mwxico Tech. It is Socorro about an hour hour and a half from Albuquerque. Absolutely beautiful country. When we went to leave I had to check with a state trooper, we had gone to their mining engineering department and had walked across all the explosive fields. I knew our shoes wouldn't pass the anti explosive technologies at the airport. A lovely statie walked us up and got us through while educating the young man at the gate. When he asked why our boots had residue I explained we were at the school in Socorro and what they taught there. He had never heard of it. He lived in Albuquerque. He was maybe two years older than my son. By the time we finished talking to him he was ready to pack his bag and see the world. It made my heart glad and a few weeks later I got a postcard from Dallas. His first on his own trip. He was exploring. More people need to do that.
I was a custodian at a college at the time, the offices I cleaned were the faculty for Teacher Ed. There was a copy of the picture on nearly every professor's door. For the entire term.
Though I respectfully submit that the first "Planet of the Apes" movies got the society wrong: while there's nothing wrong with orangutans being the priests, administrators, etc., it's chimpanzees who are a lot more warlike in RL than gorillas, despite the difference in size, so the chimps should've been the soldiers in armor on horseback. ;-)
