I am so embarrassed and ashamed of what's happening to my country. Please tell them we are NOT like these Maggetts!

Well I'd call Germans the experts in recognizing a fascist, racist, narcissistic dictator.

Nancy's avatar

And they're still embarrassed about it at the very least, at least most of them. :-/

I still remember Arnold Schwarzenegger's speech on Jan. 7, 2021, and how shocked and dismayed he was. It was like when he was growing up in Austria, having been born in 1947, and how some people (like his own father) were still massively upset about it in all sorts of ways. :-/

Carmen Honacker's avatar

This is the massive difference. I grew up in Germany. We learned about the 3rd Reich for over a year - with pictures, video footage and all kinds of horrible stuff. They drilled into us what we did. They taught us, for the lack of better term, to not be patriotic, and showed us what hate, media manipulation, ignorance and blind allegiance does. I was in 8th grade and I swore that I would have hidden the Jews. I never forgot these images and the horrors my people did. Our schools made sure that we knew.

Guess what I did, when Trump was "elected" the first time? I raised hell, lost friends and family, got in fights, because I was "stirring shit" and a trouble maker and we don't argue with or yell at our friends, family and especially not anyone who has ever served in the armed forces.

Here in Germany we do! We are not polite to assholes and we don't sit silently at the family dinner, while "uncle Joe hates on the niggers."

But then, our textbooks weren't changed, we were never told that we are the freest and best country in the world (to the contrary) and that we should be polite to people, because we are related or friends.

I have a lot to say about that, but I'm going to stop here :-)

Nancy's avatar

Good for Germany! I wish Japan would finally fess up to horrible things they did during WWII, but with them it seems to be: "We were just -- visiting our neighbors! Yeah, that's it! :D Just saying 'hi'...and then the U.S. dropped /two atomic bombs/ on us! THEY'RE the bad guys! :( Wait -- Unit 731? Er..."

Al S's avatar

And Arnold is a "No" on proposition 50 in California. WTF!?

Patty Smith's avatar

What??? Is that true??? I've been writing to California voters about Prop 50.

Nancy's avatar

Gah, that is surprising, and not in a good way. :(

Doesn't he know it's only temporary? :-/

(And necessary?)

Protesting in Massachusetts at FOUR locations. More, if time permits. They’re in almost EVERY small town west of Boston.

Be safe! Follow the rules.

I’ll be out there tomorrow. Trying to convince my teens to join me.

Editing to say thank you to those who were willing to hear and understand another perspective - love you all 🫶🏻

Wow everyone, I’m not that kind of parent. I grew up in a high-control home and church environment where I was forced to do things that weren’t really comfortable for me. For instance, the only protests I participated in as a teen were pro-life ones because that’s what my church was doing *cringe*.

I know this protest is different of course, but I want to lead by example and not force or coerce them into my way of doing life. Thanks!

JustTanNotOrange's avatar

Thank you - that’s an important perspective for us parents to keep in mind. My middle-schooler went with us to the Hands Off protest but hasn’t wanted to go again. He’s getting in to photography and I’m encouraging him to go on 10/18 to document the event. Our oldest is off at college now, and I’m hoping she protests. We’ll see. They learn by watching what we do, even if they don’t join us in the moment. Also — no kings in America!

Heidi Y's avatar

That’s why I love us liberals (and just sane people in general). Being willing to hear and learn from others’ perspectives is the best! 🫶🏻

Kaiannanthi's avatar

I hadn't thought of that since my experience as a teen was different. But i agree now that you've pointed it out. Sorry about that!

Heidi Y's avatar

I appreciate it 🫶🏻

Note to self: suggest Substack give us edit tools so I can fix my stupid typos!!

Nancy's avatar

We've got lovely tools on what I like to call "real" computers; I'm still used to having to at least sit down to one (although I'm thinking seriously about rigging up something like the old "cigarette girls" used to use in the old movies and cartoons to sell their wares from; something like a rectangular tray on a pair of shoulder straps for toting a laptop around, and using it while I'm actually physically moving :D) and having everything I need that way, rather than toting around a "computer-lite" in my butt pocket (and yes, I know it has more computing power than the entire Apollo program; the point is, it doesn't have everything that's needed, imho).

This message was edited... :D

I can also Copy Link, Restack, Collapse, and Delete. :)

I am on a phone, so that's almost certainly the difference. 😊

Click on the three dots lower right of your post. “Edit” should be an option on the list. Good luck.

Kaiannanthi's avatar

Only gives me an option to hide or delete. Wah. 😅

Kaiannanthi's avatar

Yeah, it's like 1 minute or something. I'd caught it like, 2 mins after I posted it, so it was too late.

I'm 86 with severe osteoarthritis & a hip replacement. I cannot March but I purchased the largest frog I could find & he's on my front door in place of a wreath. My heart is with the brave marchers everywhere. Go with God my friends!

Dori's avatar

Charlayne, you stay home and take care of you! I will march for both of us! The marchers need to know that there are many behind us, supporting us, and with us. The frog on your front door tells everyone you're with us!

Maria 🇮🇪's avatar

Well done Charlayne

Hope when he's watching his blood pressure spikes and that he also sees massive protests in 18 other countries. We hate him but the whole world hates him too.

“We few, we happy few.”

It’s always Shakespeare. From Henry V. His St Crispin’s Day speech before the Battle of Agincourt. Wherein the more mobile English soldiers (& archers) defeated the supposedly superior French army who were weighted down by armor on their horses bogged down in the mud.

The odds were against the English. “Never tell me the odds.” (From another epic)

Nancy's avatar

Well, the French were SO CONVINCED they had it in the bag, apparently they'd worn their stupid /jousting armor/ (you know, the stuff so heavy [about 100 pounds], they had to winch the riders aboard their horses? That was only for tournaments, when you didn't want to get injured playing some silly sport, before you could get injured for real in a war next month or whatever. In a real battle, you'd be wearing stuff weighing MAYBE 40-50 pounds, and built with far more flexibility) to a real battle. X-P

When the obligatory taunting period was over, they were so keyed up, they ran over their hired Italian mercenaries with the crossbows who were set up down in the valley between the ridges, and those that didn't get bogged down in the mud often fell off their horses and were like turtles, floundering around on their backs (because in a tourney, even if they were dismounted by a lance, they'd often have help getting back to their feet and returning to the arming station if there was a more than 1 unseating rule for that tourney).

Meanwhile, the English side had their uber-weapon, the (stolen by the Normans from the Welsh) longbow, far superior in many ways to crossbows, and archers trained in their use (a bit more than "point that way and pull the trigger"; sound familiar?)... ;)

It's been said that before the battle, the French nobles were threatening the bowmen with having their index and middle fingers removed once they won, so the archers could no longer "pluck their bows of yew." Afterwards, when the French nobles were captured and held for ransom, embarrassed, the bowmen went over to them and upthrust their two fingers into the French faces, yelling out, "Pluck yew!"

That last might be apocryphal...but it is one theory for the origin of the sound-alike expression and the accompanying hand gesture (at least in Britain, where it's two fingers vs. one). X-D
