I made this joke to my husband this morning when I woke up saw the pope had passed. He didn't seem to find it funny though. Weird how I saw posts and memes all over the internet today making the same joke. Maybe it was still "too soon" when I said it?
When I heard the Pope met with Vance before he died (on DemocracyNow), that very thought went through my mind but I didn't say it out loud. Yesterday my daughter told me there were memes everywhere about that thought. Hopefully Vance will be remembered this way!

I feel sorry that the Pope’s last moments on earth were spent with JD Vance. I sincerely hope he enjoyed time with more decent people before he passed.

Although I have issues with part of Roman Catholicism's beliefs, I found Pope Francis's example of humility and service to the downtrodden and marginalized to be a moving example of how to be a better person. I hope the next Holy Pontiff is not a backlash conservative.
Even atheists like me found a lot to admire! :) He seemed like a really good guy in many ways, and I was sad to hear of his passing. Jeez, to think JD Vance was one of your last visitors! Ew! :(
